The Leafs won the game but lost an important part of their defensive core moving forward.

The team has confirmed that defenceman Travis Dermott will be sidelined for an undetermined amount of weeks after suffering a shoulder injury during their 6-2 win over the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday night.

Dermott sustained the injury when he was hit from behind into the boards shortly after getting rid of the puck by Oilers forward Brad Malone with about 9:56 remaining in the third period. He immediately headed straight to the locker room, and did not return for the duration of the game.

The 22-year old, who is in his second season with the Leafs, has posted four goals, 13 assists and a minus-1 rating in 60 games so far this season.

The injury could’t have occurred at a worse time for the team, as they just announced hours before the contest that Jake Gardiner would also be out week-to-week with a back injury.

For the time being, Martin Marincin and Justin Holl will take Dermott and Gardiner’s place in the lineup for Thursday’s highly anticipated game against the New York Islanders.
