One of baseball’s most legendary players is heading back to where it all started.

The St. Louis Cardinals confirm that they have signed veteran slugger Albert Pujols to a one-year, $2.5 million contract.

The 42-year old had spent the first 11 seasons of his career with the Cardinals organization from 2001-2011.

During that span, he won the NL Rookie of the Year Award, Six Silver Slugger Awards, two Gold Glove Awards, two Hank Aaron Awards, three NL MVPS, an NLCS MVP and two World Series titles. He was also selected to nine MLB All-Star games.

He needs 21 homers to become just the fourth player in MLB history to reach the 700 home run mark. He currently sits fifth on the all-time home run list, and needs just 18 to surpass Alex Rodriguez for fourth.

Barring any major injury issues, the Cardinals will use Pujols as a part-time DH against left-handed pitchers, and a pinch hit option in late game scenarios.
