Yankees acquire James Paxton from Mariners

By on November 20, 2018

The New York Yankees just made a major addition to their starting rotation.

The team announced Monday that they have acquired star pitcher James Paxton from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for their top pitching prospect Justus Sheffield, outfield prospect Dom Thompson-Williams and right-handed pitching prospect Erik Swanson.

Paxton, who was initially selected in the 1st round of the 2009 MLB Draft, has compiled a 41-26 record, 3.42 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, and 617 strikeouts over a span of six seasons, 102 starts and 582.1 innings pitched with the Mariners organization.

The 30-year old Canadian, who is known by his peers as ‘Big Maple’, threw a no-hitter on home soil in 2018 when it took him just 99 pitches to mow down the Blue Jays in a 5-0 win on May 8.

He is still under two more years of team control before he can test the unrestricted free agent market, and is expected to make approximately $9 million in salary next season.
