Tennis Association’s Failings Result in Sexual Misconduct

The Lawn Tennis Association (the governing body of tennis in Great Britain) will be looking into its hiring process more deeply after coach, Daniel Sanders was sentenced to six years in prison for the sexual abuse of an underage player. This not very shocking story was followed up with the not so shocking admission by the LTA stating that they didn’t properly act on the warnings or complaints that were given to them prior to Sanders’ conviction.

The LTA has stated that they will further review their process and safeguards in order to resolve issues like this in the future. The LTA released the following statement:

“The overriding objective of the review is to ensure that any failings by the LTA are brought to light and to ensure that lessons are learned and similar failings are not repeated.”

For many years Sanders slipped through the cracks as again and again parents and other coaches reported Sanders’ sexual misconduct and bullying behaviour to the LTA. Even a parent who also happened to be a police officer assessed Sanders’ actions as that of a sexual predator and filed a report to the association but was again ignored. Countless others have come forward and frustrated parents simply hope that change to the association can be made so that it won’t happen again.
