Senators and Lightning discussing Erik Karlsson trade

By on July 6, 2018

The Ottawa Senators may have found a trade partner for Erik Karlsson.

According to reports, the team is working towards trading their star defenceman to the Eastern Conference leading Tampa Bay Lightning. Specific details have not been disclosed, although it is expected they will need a third team to join the trade talks in order for Tampa Bay to free up enough salary to facilitate the trade. The New York Rangers could be the other team involved in these talks.

Karlsson, who has one-year remaining on his current contract, will likely sign a long-term extension with the Lightning immediately following the trade. The 28-year old was selected 15th overall in the 2008 NHL Draft, and had spent his entire nine-year career with the Senators organization. During that span, he has posted 126 goals, 392 assists and a minus-37 rating in 627 games. He was also been selected to six NHL All-Star Games, and has won two Norris Trophy awards, which is given to the best defenceman in a single season.

More to come.
