Major League Soccer announced Monday that Toronto FC head coach Greg Vanney is the recipient of the 2017 MLS Coach of the Year Award.

The 43-year old, who beat out Atlanta United’s Gerardo “Tata” Martino and Chicago Fire’s Veljko Paunović for the honour, led Toronto FC to an MLS best 20-5-9 record in 2017. The team finished 12 points ahead of 2nd-place NYCFC in the MLS Eastern Conference, and broke a league record for most points in a single season with 69.

It marks the first time Vanney has won the award since taken over as Toronto FC head coach in 2014. It’s also the first time a coach for a Canadian club has ever taken home the hardware.

Toronto FC will look to advance to the MLS Cup Final for the second straight year when they take on the Columbus Crew for leg 2 of the Eastern Conference final on Wednesday.
