The Tampa Bay Lightning can breathe a sigh of relief. Dan Girardi’s injury is not as serious as anticipated.

The team announced Monday that the veteran defenceman’s test results came back negative. He is be listed as day-to-day for the time being.

The news comes just a day after he took a one-timer by Martin Frk to the back of his helmet midway through the second period of the Lightning’s 5-2 win over the Red Wings on Sunday.

“He’s doing much better than that looked,” coach Lightning head coach Jon Cooper.

“I’ve been coaching at all levels for a long time, and that was one of the scariest things I’ve ever seen, but hopefully everything is going to be OK. He’s just going to have a couple tests.”

Girardi, who immediately left the game following the incident, has excelled in his first season with the franchise. Through 42 games, he has posted three goals, eight assists, a plus-17 rating and 96 blocked shots (which ranks him 6th in the NHL).
