Canadian MMA star Georges St-Pierre was recently diagnosed with colitis, and has decided to step away from the sport for some time until he fully recovers from the disease. He announced his decision to vacate the middleweight belt on Thursday.

“My fight at UFC 217 was one of the greatest nights of my life but I now need to take some time to focus on my health. Out of respect to the athletes and the sport, I don’t want to hold up the division. I will be giving up my belt and once I’m healthy I look forward to working with the UFC to determine what’s next in my career.” said St-Pierre in a statement.

St-Pierre, 36, made his return from a four-year hiatus last month, and became the fourth fighter in UFC history to hold belts in more than one division after he defeated Michael Bisping via rear-naked choke in the second round of their bout to capture the Middleweight belt at UFC 217 in New York.

The UFC has decided to upgrade Robert Whittaker from interim to undisputed middleweight champion in wake of St-Pierre’s announcement. His first title defence will be asgainat Luke Rockhold on February 10 at UFC 221 in Perth, Australia.
