Some sad news to share coming out of the hockey world.

Charles Wang, the co-founder of billion dollar software company CA Technologies and former New York Islanders minority owner, passed away due to the effects of lung cancer at his home in Oyster Bay, New York on Sunday. He was 74 at the time of his death.

“Charles Wang was a great man,” said Islanders President and General Manager Lou Lamoriello in a statement.

“He always spoke of his love for the Long Island community and the passionate fan base. Long Island would not have a team if it were not for Charles.”

Wang had purchased the franchise with Sanjay Kumar for nearly $190 million in 2000, and played a pivotal role in help keeping the team in Long Island despite lingering pressures of relocation. He eventually sold his ownership to a group of investors in 2016.
