The Houston Astros have locked up Alex Bregman long term.

The team announced Tuesday that they have signed the All-Star third baseman to a five-year, $100 million contract extension.

The deal, which will essentially buy out the first couple of years of his unrestricted free agency, is the second highest contract in franchise history behind Jose Altuve’s $151 million deal in March 2018.

The 24-year old, who was initially selected by the Boston Red Sox in the 29th round of the 2012 MLB June Amateur Draft, is entering his fourth season in the majors.

Bregman had a breakthrough year in 2018, posting a .286 batting average to go a long with a career-best 31 homers, 103 RBI and a .926 OPS in 157 games. He was also selected to his first MLB All-Star Game and finished fifth in AL MVP voting, a year after winning the World Series.
